From Battle Droids to Chatbots: Why Humans Call AI ‘Clankers’

On TikTok, Reddit, and X, a strange insult is echoing across feeds: “clanker.” It’s not new internet slang, but a word ripped straight from a galaxy far, far away. In Star Wars lore, clone troopers spat “clanker” at battle droids — a dismissive term for machines that clanked and clattered their way through combat, soulless and expendable.

Now, Gen Z has resurrected the slur for a different kind of droid army: AI systems. Chatbots that hallucinate answers, customer-service bots that loop endlessly, algorithmic feeds clogged with AI-generated “slop” — all have been branded clankers. What began as a piece of sci-fi trivia has mutated into a cultural meme, a shorthand for everything cold, frustrating, or dehumanizing about the AI boom.

But why this word? And why now?
